review 1: I want to read this. But I don't want to read it without reading the original because I suspect it won't be as hilarious and relevant as it is supposed to be. Now, since I've heard so many *shite* things about 50 shades of grey (ehem excuse my language) and hence unwilling to buy it... I shall patronize one of my friends into buying one.... muahahahbut no seriously :p I'm just going to borrow it from someone and only then will I buy this book to read :D
review 2: If you were kind of hating life and everything after you finished “Fifty Shades of Grey”, read “A Coupla Shades of Taupe”. It will restore your faith in humanity. It is a spot on parody following Alexandra Aluminum, books and stuff major at the University of the Ozarks, and her seduction by Pag
... morean Taupe, the richest guy in Arkansas. I’m not a big audible laugher while I’m reading; I’m a smirker, under-my-breath chuckler, smile-and-look-into-middle-distance contemplator. I say this to qualify the fact that I laughed out loud many times during this book. Some of the humor is just silly-funny:“I say that I could actually really go for a Crystal Pepsi. She informs me that they no longer make Crystal Pepsi. This is news to me, and I try to keep it together.”And some of the best humor is directed at the writing/ plot structure of “Fifty Shades of Grey” (or, to be fair, romance novels archetypes):“I wonder if we’ll predictably run into each other again, if he’ll whisk me away to his mansion, if I’ll lose my virginity to him with zero pain or awkwardness and have three screaming orgasms.”This is my favorite of all the jokes because it hits the nail right on the head:“Paco is a mildly racist and not terribly important character, but because you won’t find any other characters with skin darker than beach sand, his singular presence assures the reader that the author had been on the It’s a Small World ride at least once.”You will probably not like this if you are a true fan of “Fifty Shades of Grey”- the humor is too barbed. If you loved “Fifty Shades” and loved this I would love to hear from you and your reasons for liking both. This book is very funny and a good palette cleanser for someone who had problems with “Fifty Shades”. I will be looking out for other works by Court Burback. less
