review 1: This is one of those man messes up then does anything he can to win back his totally beautiful, intelligent and wonderful wife. There is quite a bit of charm and wit in the telling, and the book is easy to get into and provides an interesting analysis of modern day marriage. Richard is an artist from England who meets and marries the perfect French woman while living in America and has a perfect little girl with her, who is five at this time. After several years living in Paris, the marriage becomes mundane and stale and he proceeds to have a seven month affair with a gorgeous American. And he is so enraptured by her that it is she that needs to end the affair. I would say at one point that this was a male fantasy manifesto, except that it was written by a woman. The w... moreife finds out about the affair and its length and intensity and kicks our hero out of the house. The book proceeds to have Richard analyze his life and marriage and then try to find a way to win himself back into the favorable graces of his spouse. The end result seems pretty obvious from the outset, no big surprises here. But there are some touching moments and some really clever lines. Not a great novel, but a very enjoyable one.
review 2: To file under: "love-to-hate-you." I hate this narrator. Does this influence my opinion of the story as a whole? Is that unfair? Hmm. You may need to be a cheater or cheated upon to give this book 5 stars. The problem was (if it can even be called a problem...and because I can always find a problem) I've never had a husband who adulterates so, are these characters reacting realistically? How would I know? I wondered this because at times I felt that I was reading soap opera dialogue and laughed out loud at its cheesiness...then I laughed a tiny bit more at how inappropriate it is to laugh at such a miserable situation. But maybe that's how people speak when a marriage is collapsing? This is the conundrum. In addition, how am I supposed to root for a narrator who is cheating in an awfully hearty way and at no fault of his beautiful, educated, rich and basically perfect, loving wife and their perfect, loving child as they live their perfect lives in the center of Paris? How, I ask you? However, when I think of this story in general terms- it being about a creative artist person who is insecure, lost, and screws up, then has a period of remorse, regret, rebuilding, and tries to pull himself back up to get his life back on track...well then, maybe it is more relatable. The comeback theme seems to be in style this season. However, I do not think this cheater suffered enough for his actions for me to like him/this story much more despite the interesting adult "growing pains" moments that were conveyed well. less
