review 1: Habibi gave me some mixed feelings. The author tries to bring different ideas together through symbolism (east vs west religion, science vs technology, freedom vs captivity, love vs sexual attraction). In reviews you will read that this book is about the love between Dodola and Zam, two slaves who find their way to freedom. But it is also about how to cope with loneliness, how to cope a loss. What elements play in the tragedy of losing a person (Dodola grieves over the loss of her friend-slave more than the loss of her natural son). The author often succeeds and makes you stop and think and re-read the last thread. At other times the sequence is lost, there is not enough clues to follow. What is the role of the archangels in the story? How does the pollution of our planet ... morefit to the story? Nevertheless the story is fully captivating despite the 700+ pages.
review 2: I’m still taking in the beauty of this book - from the writing to the illustrations to the design to everything basically. It takes you into another world and throws you through various boxes of emotions. I’d say more about the story and parts of it that I loved and parts I didn’t like but I think I’m still a little speechless and unable to walk out of the book to be able to comprehend my thoughts. That’s the kind of effect it had on me. less

Not as good as Blankets in my opinion. But nevertheless, still remarkable.

Interesting, it encompassed more themes than I thought it would.
