review 1: I really wish I could give it four stars, but "Legacy of Kings" crumpled under the weight of promises and world-changing events, and - as a result - the major reveals and plot twists read as kind of flat. (I had one moment of satisfactory "I knew it!", but that was all.) Gwynofar's subplot was highly unconvincing and I had the impression that Friedman used it as her last resort to push events forward. Also, given that sex as a tool of power was central to the trilogy, I hoped for a more thorough analysis of the matter, and less cliche outcomes here and there. On the other hand, Kamala and Colivar are still amazing bastards. I could write a whole essay on how I grew to appreciate Kamala's personality. And - perhaps the best thing about this book is how it evades a happy end... moreing. Sure, one major threat is gone, but other things remain the same, or become worse. This realization was quite chilling.
review 2: Life's too short to read boring books. All things considered, I should have known the signs with the middle book. No character depth, not a single character I was interested in, and a few even a bit repulsive to me, like Siderea. The only character I cared a little bit about was Kamala. I made it to the 50% mark skimming, and then decided to just call it quits. This trilogy might be for some people, but ultimately, not for me. I started in high spirits with the first book, and it quickly lost the plot for me with subsequent books. If you enjoy fantasy with an interesting magic system and a nemesis race that seems loosely based on an insectoid version of Dragonriders of Pern, and are not looking for deep characters you can relate to, it might be for you though. less

Another really good series. I didn't get to know most of the charactors as wll as I'd have liked to.

Almost as exciting as the Coldfire Trilogy in its own way. Thoroughly enjoyable!
