review 1: I wish this book was around when my daughters were small. It is easily read and wonderfully illustrated. I could reread it and marvel with each rereading. Some may dislike this book because God is portrayed as female. This is not offensive to me as I view God as neither male or female. If you get a chance, pick this one up at the library. I found it on the adult new books check-out. Treat yourself and marvel!
review 2: This thirty one page book of poetry only takes about half an hour to read, but it surpasses all expectations. It has a theme of compassion, and is very different from other books about religion. Each of the sixteen poems describes God trying ordinary things, like roller skating, riding a boat, and writing fan mail. It humanizes Him, and
... morecreates someone readers can relate to and understand. Each poem is illustrated by Marla Frazee, who shows Him with a different appearance each time. Cynthia Rylant's free verse prose has tender, sad, funny, sincere, and encouraging moments, like God opening a nail shop because He likes looking at hands, which He considers His greatest creation, enjoying a nice cup of coffee under a tree, and calling Mother Teresa over to bring Him comic books and juice when He catches a cold. Another creative thing the author includes is that in some of the poems, God is referred to as "She". The illustrations show Him as many different people, from a young boy to a middle aged woman. This is a great message to show to others, that anyone can do anything, and surpass images or stereotypes. There is also plenty of symbolism. In "God went to the doctor." God has a skip in His heart, and He says it is because there are people who don't believe in him. For many people, this book can seem offensive, but the author means no harm. Regardless of beliefs, however, this book is a wonderful and heartfelt read. With beautiful details, pictures, and poetry, this book is sure to make you think deeply and smile. less

Love Frazee's illustrations -- especially "God got in a boat" -- as well as Rylant's clever poetry.

Simple but deep. Funny, poignant, a thoughtful pause.
