review 1: I'll add my voice to the chorus saying that, although there were plenty of goodies in this book, they didn't add up to a satisfying whole. The main problem for me was the narrator, who was so lightly sketched that she hardly existed. The narration veered wildly from sublime to plodding to downright confusing. Giving 3 stars because there were some wonderful sections, but overall this book was more of a 2.
review 2: The book links 1970's China with its historical past through a silk scroll once belonging to the Emperor Huizong. The scroll passes on to the last emperor and is ripped apart by him and tossed away in his plane ride away from China. The missing pieces are purported to contain a Buddhist sutra in an unknown language. This ties back through a student t
... moreranslator from the U.S. who by chance meets an grocer whose family has ties to the missing pieces. The author fully characterizes the contemporary mood and challenges of the period within the context of an unlikely romance between the translator and grocer. She learns more of his past, especially his French linguist father who came into possession of the pieces and sought to translate them. While beautifully written, unfortunately, the story did not pull me in or create an emotional connection for me. less
