review 1: Not so much an examination of what the average person could be doing to create a more healthy food system, but, instead, a lovely examination of what a chef, as a major buyer of extremely high-quality food, could do to support a healthier food system. The case studies of different farms and communities in the world that are doing what the author feels is right are really nice to examine, even if some of them have been beaten to death.
review 2: This was a fascinating book about how connected our food systems are - or, rather, should and could be. Barber discusses soil health, plant genetics, the health of the sea and its fish populations, and livestock like cows, chickens, and pigs. His work at his Blue Hill Restaurant and Stone Barns (the companion farm) is an... more evolving exploration of what it means to be a farmer, a consumer, a chef, and an eater in our world today. I've added a visit to Stone Barns to next year's To Do list. less
