review 1: A wonderful book. And I don't even row. I hardly know the first thing about rowing. This books feels a bit like Larson's books where he weaves a human interest story together with a major historical moment. Brown does an incredible job of cultivating all of the rowers and drawing vivid pictures of the West in the 1930's. Even though I knew what happened, the suspense was palpable! Wonderful.
review 2: I loved this book. I had never even thought about what it takes to be a part of a rowing team; this book brings it to life. So interesting, I will definitely be watching for the rowing teams at the next Olympics. It is also a very good story about the decade in which it took place. My heart bled for the little motherless boy whose step-mother didn't want
... more him and whose father wouldn't fight for him. less
