review 1: This book is definitely interesting--the history of Senna's family and particularly her parents, is captivating. The book, however, is too fragmented for my taste. The memories are all poignant, but I wonder if each one is necessary or in the right place. This is a story the author needed to release and I'm happy to have been apart of her catharsis. It's well written but doesn't have much direction.
review 2: A great story of discovery of the author's paternal roots with her father in tow through the poor sections of South. It struck me very personally as I'm in a similar quandary: much is known (even cherished) about my Mother's side of the family but I know very little of my Father's family history. As Ms. Senna digs deeper and deeper, she uncovers a startling
... morely different history of what her family really knows about her father, his relatives and her father's and his parent's hidden past "re-written" to be socially acceptable. She tackles the challenge of overcoming hatred of her father (due to the claimed "ugliest divorce in Boston's history") and rediscovers love and appreciation of him. In this work, she offers a stunningly rendered personal heritage that mirrors the complexities of race, class, and ethnicity in the U.S. less

Digging up the family tree often leads to trouble.
