review 1: I've read several of the StoryCorps books, now; and I have enjoyed all of them. This book made me think about my mom and our relationship...of course, and I wondered if I were to interview Mom what she would say. I'm not sure I'm ready for that. As I read the different stories, though, I was called to remember many crazy, happy times with Mom and many times we just didn't see eye to eye. I suppose it's that way for most folks. I appreciated so many of these stories that showed how mothers will do almost anything for their children. I've been in some of those situations with my children, and I hope that understand how much I love them. I would recommend this book; it's wonderful and encouraging.
review 2: I love the StoryCorps project. I first got acquain
... moreted with StoryCorps online, and began listening to interview excerpts online and via podcasts, and then I read (and listened to) All There is: Love Stories from StoryCorps, and then read Listening is an Act of Love. Both of these books were well-organized, cohesive, and very touching. The stories were natural, and were very eloquent in their genuineness and honesty, and were as touching as they were, because it felt as if the person wasn't even aware of the tape recorder, which gave the reader/listener this unique and intimate window into their story. This StoryCorps book, like the others, has some very poignant moments in it, but is lacking some of its organization and cohesiveness, and seems to fall short in what I would expect it to be in its honoring of mothers. This next part is hard to word correctly, because I don't want it to seem like I am judging peoples' personal stories, because I'm not! I just feel that some of these excerpts and stories weren't the best for this book, because they didn't seem as natural as the stories in the other two StoryCorps books were. Sometimes, especially in the Wisdom chapter in which mothers were talking to their children, it felt as if some of the lessons being told were forced (if that makes any sense), and the wisdom passed along seemed much more natural and apparent in the later chapters when it was told between friends, etc. in remembrance of their mothers. Overall, this book, despite not living up to the high expectations I had for it, was an interesting book that has still captivated my interest in StoryCorps. And, I'm giving my mom this book for mother's day. less
