review 1: I really loved this book,it was informative and engaging and very well researched. David Hill's use of primary sources giving firsthand accounts of the events and proceedings relating to the story of England’s colonial expansion in Australia, provides context to the narrative, fuels the imagination and enables the reader to have a sense of being there. The book gave me an entirely new and deeper understanding of the reality faced by those who struggled with Australia as a new frontier. As a result of reading this book, my respect for and understanding of the celebration of Australia Day takes on a completely new meaning.

... morependence the British government had to choose someone else to dump the convicts as they had been sending them to the American colonies for the past 50 years - Botany Bay was suggested), how they felt about coming to the southern continent and the fact that it wasn't just white/British people in the fleet, there were different races and religions who arrived here in 1788. Puts a hole in the racists argument that "We were here first!" less
