review 1: I really appreciated his points on entitlement and pride in our culture today (especially among young adults), and he had some clever turns of phrase about technology and our school systems, but overall, this was a relatively blah read. Do not even ATTEMPT to read this book without a dictionary. This brilliant English teacher uses words I have never heard of. I thank him for expanding my vocabulary, but for those who do NOT want to look up 3-4 words per page...yikes. (For example, just say "Barney" instead of a "corpulent purple dinosaur"). Also, his train of thought is sometimes hard to follow, especially in his complex, very involved sentences. Also, this book is from a very humanistic perspective, talking about living life to the fullest, for YOUR happiness HERE, becau... morese "this life is all there is". I strongly disagree with this, so I had some issues with several of the chapters.
review 2: Ok. I got through about half of this and decided that I was special enough to not have to read anymore of this book. So, there ya go. This guy is smart. He has a way with words. He has experience. And he has some definitive ideas about kids that are spot on. Some times. He is a high school teacher after all. But his ideas do not have a large scope. His ideas are for the kids in his culture. For the rich, elite, self indulgent ones. And if you take it like that, you can suffer through. But, I could not. I argue McCullough's multiculturalism knowledge and just how much he knows about "the other." I think there is a bit of him that needs some expansion. He puts all kids into one category and for that I could not stomach his thoughts much longer. So, yes, your speech was good. Your ideas are not bad. But that is where I think it may end. Go teach in a different school district in a socioeconomically deprived neighborhood and then get back to me. less

Loved his graduation speech from 2012 but this book was babble. Truly disappointed.
