review 1: It was a tossup whether to give this four, or five, stars, but the little "amazing" that pops up when you roll the mouse over the stars finally persuaded me. I am quite sure that other acts of heroism and courage may be held up to compare with Doug Mawson's survival - but will almost certainly fall short. The modern attempt to recreate what he went through were a revealing part of the story. Well worth your time.

... moreod, inadequate shelter, and significant and life-threatening injuries/illnesses. Mawson's achievement stands as one of the greatest accomplishments in the era of heroic polar exploration. I liked the book a lot, and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. less
