review 1: If you like dry humor and have a soft spot for dogs, then give this a go. An autobiography of sorts that tells various stories and experiences of the author and his wife as they rescue dogs from high kill shelters in Southern California and then make a cross country move with 25 of their rescues. Peppered with humor, heartbreak and all that goes with a life with critters between, it's a good read!
review 2: Entertaining book of the real-life cross-country trek (and the events leading up to it) of mystery author David Rosenfeldt, his wife, and their 25 dogs from So. Cal to Maine. Hard to wrap one's mind around moving that many dogs at a time. I've done it with 2 dogs, can't imagine with that many. The book also contains interspersed chapters about the back-st... moreory of these rescues, and others.Great concept and overall entertaining read. The only part that really grated on my was David's self-description as a self-deprecating, "bah-humbug" character, his whining, and his inability to see how everyone else (a bevy of volunteers and his wife)managed to treat the whole escapade as an adventure and actually enjoy themselves. It really, really got old. That being said, overall I enjoyed it, particularly the moving stories about the rescued dogs. David, his wife, and I share the desire to rescue every possible dog out of our over-brimming shelters. Unlike them, I don't act on it in the sense that I don't bring them all home, but I admire and respect them for doing so, and giving so much of themselves to these wonderful creatures. less
