Oh You Pretty Things
Don’t you know you’re driving your
Mamas and Papas insane
Let me make it plain
You gotta make way for the Homo Superior
–David Bowie, “Oh You Pretty Things”
Boriska Kipriyanovich, 21, claims he is an ancient Martian reborn into our current era to warn humanity against its destruction. The young man has a genius IQ—able to speak, it is claimed, soon after birth, and possessing knowledge of astronomy and ancient civilizations that clearly surpassed anything he could have learned in school.
Kipriyanovich’s is not a unique narrative within the annals of UFOlogy, New Age movements, and even past-life regression tales. In fact this very archetype of the “alien” or “magical” child is quite prevalent in our popular culture—the story of the unassuming “cuckoo” who is placed seamlessly within human society. It’s “Superman,” basically.
Why does this archetype keep popping up? And why so much in our modern era?
Well, one way to look at it is simply metaphorically. Every generation has a degree of anxiety and distrust regarding the next—especially within the last several hundred years, where the differences between the generations have become more and more stark.
And the foundation of this anxiety and distrust goes way past mere issues of sociology and changing tastes, having its roots in the primal animal desire to maintain one’s “species” in the face of encroaching evolution. One species of primate notices a strange offshoot—looking slightly different, maybe slightly more advanced—grazing in their grass. And so Primate Species #1 makes it a point to kill Primate Species Off-Shoot #2.
Fast-forward millennia, and you see this again with the continual persecution of Gnostic Christians. Now there’s a bunch of scripture and semantics tossed in there…but at heart, it’s the same thing.
As David Bowie sang in “Oh, You Pretty Things”:
Oh You Pretty Things
Don’t you know you’re driving your
Mamas and Papas insane
Oh You Pretty Things
Don’t you know you’re driving your
Mamas and Papas insane
Let me make it plain
You gotta make way for the Homo Superior Look at your children
See their faces in golden rays
Don’t kid yourself they belong to you
They’re the start of a coming race
The earth is a bitch
We’ve finished our news
Homo Sapiens have outgrown their use
All the strangers came today
And it looks as though they’re here to stay
This song came out in 1971—just at the beginning of a rather bizarre period that saw celebrities and “normal folk” reporting being contacted/”possessed” by “alien” entities. And yet, apply it to the Boriska Kipriyanovich story. Or the testimonies of author Whitley Strieber and “celebrity psychic” Uri Geller. Or any number of movies including Children Of The Damned, Knowing, and the “X-Men” series.
None of this is confirmation that Kipriyanovich is indeed a bonafide reincarnated Martian. Reportedly an extremely shy young man, it could simply be that he has an extremely vivid imagination coupled by admittedly “superhuman” intellect.
But I think we do have to face the fact that as time accelerates, each subsequent generation does seem to be getting more “advanced” than the last—not just per schooling or the use of technology, but seemingly from birth. And that we have adults now on this planet of massively contrasting intellects, outlooks, perspectives, talents, and etc.
If you have ever had that strange experience of feeling like you were literally born to the wrong family, in the wrong community, and on the wrong planet…certainly, this is just a matter of socialization and psychology? Or has the archetype struck again?
