review 1: I have mixed feelings about this book. It started off quite entertaining, then bogged down in vaudeville act descriptions that didn't move the store forward fast enough. Then it redeemed itself with a strong, faster paced, entertaining middle. But just when things were good, it became totally Hollywood with a series of improbable events that made the reader feel good with a classic "surprise" twist that wasn't a surprise because taking the Hollywood style route of story telling for the last third of the book meant there was only one feel good ending available. Read if you're curious about the 1907 setting, the end of vaudeville and the rise of motion pictures.
review 2: I enjoyed the premise of this novel. Struggling, vaudeville theatre in old New York; bold he
... moreroine, Pepper MacClaire, who wants to save a dying era; and a full cast of other characters, from a rich, self-centered heir to a devoted, shy, hero who finally gains the heart of our star. However, I thought there were times when the 'history lesson' made the story drag on. I liked the overall picture the author was trying to portray around the turn of the 20th century, where the moving pictures and 'flickers' were pushing all the smaller theatres out. But I didn't need to know the entire lay out of New York or learn much about people that most of us don't even know. I felt some of that could have been left out, but otherwise, it was entertaining for a once read. less
