review 1: Most of it is delightful, with surprising sentences sprinkled througout, e.g.: “After breakfast he refilled his coffee cup and took it to his study. He let it get cold and drank what he called his ‘suckments’ at intervals during the morning. A tidy, new-to-the-job maid took the cup back to the pantry, emptied and washed it. This enraged my father: ‘Some monkey’s orphan has taken my suckments.’ Thereafter he locked the cup in his safe.”And examples of true English eccentricity:“He begged plumes from the hats of his women friends and, picking one up, would sigh with nostalgia and say things like, ‘Ettie Desborough, Ascot, 1921.’ Once the flies were ready, he lay in the bath imagining he was a salmon while Edward, the butler, pretending to be a fishing rod... more, jerked them over his submerged head.”
review 2: I read this because of being a Downton Abbey fan. The book is during the same time period post WWI as far as Deborah being born. It is very fascinating to experience firsthand the life of a child of aristocracy. She met royalty and the famous during her life. She also speaks about her controversal sisters. They are a family with widely differing views from one being a Hitler sympathizer to the family rebel Nancy Mitford. One thing being clear they love and support one another regardless of their individual views. The Duchess has family ties to the Kennedy family and the royal family. The last few chapters dragged but overall I enjoyed this book. less
