review 1: Man. living on his own in a cottage in Northumbria, rescues a kitten. Though the vet doesn't expect it to live without it's mother at only two weeks, the man manages to nurse it through. These are memories of his first year with the cat.The kitten, Toby Jug, is no doubt adorable, and meant a tremendous amount to O'Connor. Unfortunately for me, the story is told in a style slightly formal, cliched, and well, awkward. The anecdotes are cute, but the whole thing is just too stilted to ever really allow me to attach, emotionally. It's clear that O'Connor loves nature and was very creative in saving the kitten and looking after it. But just as the cover of the book is a Photoshop collage of generic elements, so too, is the telling. The only really surprising aspect of the whole... more thing was what O'Connor managed to discover about where Toby Jug came from.Cute enough and not heartbreaking.Lida's copy.
review 2: Although this book was published in 2009, it is set sometime earlier, maybe the 1960's or 70's? There are many things about it that indicate it isn't quite a modern day tale - but it is a good one. A young professor, living alone, takes in an orphaned kitten, Toby Jug. The book, all but one chapter, is the detailed story of the cat's first year of life - with one chapter at the end dedicated to the rest of his life. I enjoyed the story very much - partially because I like cats, particularly because, despite some decisions of the author I found puzzling, his affection and attachment are very genuine. He doesn't always do things in what might be the best way, at least given what we now know about raising kittens - but his heart is always in the right place, and he's very honest. His directness is endearing - few animal rescuers admit so many moments of self doubt.I enjoyed the author's voice, observations, perspectives and the details he noticed about Toby Jug. There are no photos of the cat, only a few illustrations, but he paints vivid pictures with his words. If you have ever loved an animal, odds are high you will find something to appreciate in this book. less
