review 1: Showalter provides a brilliant battle study, illuminating the "crossover" point between the declining German forces and improving Soviets. He does not include the level of unit or tactical detail other studies of Kursk have emphasized, but instead focuses on the ideologies and organizations or the contending forces, with many deft turns of phrase. Insightful enough to satisfy experts, it is still a highly-accessible popular history. My only complaint would be the illustrations, which exclusively show Wehrmacht personnel and equipment.
review 2: Professor Showalter's exciting and readable account of this pivotal battle on the Eastern Front is a fine addition to the corpus of work on Kursk. The text and the photos are somewhat German-centric, and the maps leav
... moree a lot to be desired, but the narrative gives the reader a real feel for the ebb and flow of the battle. Showalter is also assiduous at placing the campaign firmly in its strategic and historical context, as well as describing the strengths and weaknesses of the combatants. If you have an interest in the Second World War, this book is not to be missed. less
