review 1: This was a wonderful book. To say it is a scientific book does not do justice to the clever and beautiful writing of Diane Ackerman . Each chapter was a story unto itself, about people, animals, the human body, our planet. No lecturing and scolding but some wonderful stories and insights that really make you think. I will have to research her other books to see what else I will want to read of Ackerman.
review 2: A pleasant, engaging, curious read. I liked Ackerman's attention to history, anthropology, and ecology throughout the book, with pertinent applications to contemporary society. The chapter-ending transitions were also a nice touch, and subtly advanced the notion that everything in our world is interconnected. Assessing the wide variation, largely a... morelong lines of technological and economic advancement, of human impact on the environment would have been beyond the scope and intent of this book, but I had hoped for more allusions to this key element of today's world. less
