review 1: I had a great time reading this novel. It was so interesting to “walk a mile” in the shoes of a woman who enters Mormonism and a plural marriage. I think many of us have thought about both of those things, but only very briefly and probably quite dismissively. Mary Rose’s story opens the reader’s eyes to not only why someone may make those choices, but how living those decisions every day can impact them emotionally and spiritually. I am also a lover of historical fiction, especially when it has an interesting plot and true (I can’t emphasize the importance of historical accuracy enough) events taking place. While I knew the basics of Mormonism, Joseph Smith, and Bringham Young prior to opening the book, I quickly learned that I barely knew the first thing about ... morethis religion, how those who initially converted lived, or the life of Joseph Smith. During the scene of “Ole’ Joe Smith’s” demise, I was nearly convinced that what I was reading must be pure fiction. I was actually feeling somewhat irritated toward the author for feeding me hogwash, until I confirmed it for myself. Needless to say, Diane Noble must have had quite an interesting time doing her research for this novel!I have seen several reviews where readers disliked the book because they disagreed with the actions of the characters in the story. I have absolutely been there myself (e.g., everything I have ever read by Wally lamb), but I do find their actions believable and even understandable, even if they may not be advisable. The book is by no means perfect in my eyes (that is quite rare), but it is absolutely worth the read.I would read this again, and am seriously considering reading it’s sequel (The Betrayal).
review 2: I've had my eye on this book for a long while, and finally got my hands on it. I have to say, it wasn't as good I was hoping. I found myself skimming pages that didn't seem to have much to do with the sister wife plot, which was the main reason I was interested in the story but unfortunately it didn't seem to get rolling until almost the end of the book. The idea of polygamy is intriguing, but I enjoyed the 19th Wife a lot more. less
