review 1: Great fun. On one of the first pages, Van Dyke says if we are looking for dirt, go elsewhere. Very natural-sounding memoir, just like Van Dyke. Fun to get backstage info on "The Dick Van Dycke Show" and understand why it was such a gem. Very reassuring to hear how Van Dyke set out to do family friendly shows and how he stuck to that even if he got some gruff from some folks. He also speaks seriously, and yet in that honest way Van Dyke would, about his alcoholism and other trials, and how he overcame them and continues to work on them. Even if you don't agree with how he handled some issues, Van Dyke openly and honestly presents his experiences in a way that you realize he is human and handles things the best way he knows how, like the rest of us, even if we would have don... moree things much differently. How reassuring it is to find someone who absolutely LOVES their job, finds absolute joy in it, and realizes how lucky he is to get so much work, simply because he loves making people laugh.
review 2: This book was enjoyable although a little dry. It brushed over his many years in the industry with tame and simplistic anecdotes. He was very open about his personal relationships and his battle with alcohol addiction. I would have liked a little more in-depth look at his life and possibly there is an biographical author out there who will do just that. Dick Van Dyke is a person who made me laugh and find humor in the mundane. He is a remarkable fellow and I think his biography is a little thin and needs some beefing out. I am not suggesting that he has anything to hide but I would have liked better a more full history. What he shared was very good and I would recommend it to fans of Disk Van Dyke with the admonishment that this is not as complete as you might wish. But, something good is better than nothing. You are loved Mr. Van Dyke please write some more. less

What's not to love? He's every bit as happy-go-lucky in real life as he is on-screen. 3.5 stars.
