review 1: SummaryThe main character of the book is Joss Jones, an ex-pop star who return to her home town after the death of her grandmother. Joss inherits her grandmothers house but soon finds herself being haunted. That same ghost that has been haunting her is also the one who pulls her through the lake and takes her back in time to 1899. Here she finds herself in a time that makes no sense to her and a woman who tries to set her up with a wealthy man to care for her. Joss has no intentions of being set up and tries desperately to find her way home. She finds herself having feelings for the now live man who she was being haunted by and with a mission to take them both back to her own time of 2011.Why I didn’t Like it:First let me just say that the summary that I provided above i... mores my way of simplifying this book down to the absolute basics of what I could understand and what I think the author was trying to tell.Joss starts in 2011, going back to her hometown and being haunted by a ghost, that is identified as a boy that disappeared from town about 10 years ago named Kyle Copeland. Then she is pulled into a lake by this ghost back to the year of 1899. She is in Bandit Creek 1899 and finds herself face to face with who she thinks is Kyle, but it’s not Kyle, he goes by the name Morgan Hawes. One of the wealthy men in Bandit Creek. Morgan even goes as far as to show Joss his birth certificate to prove that he is in fact Morgan Hawes and not Kyle Copeland. Morgan and Joss find themselves attracted to each other and have a one night stand that ends with Morgan proposing marriage. There is practically no courting of these two and hardly enough of a story between the two of them to be satisfied. Morgan then goes missing the next day. Joss also finds out that she has been sold by the lady of the hotel that she has been staying at to a rival of Morgan’s and that she is to leave with him in a few days. Joss makes plans to run away, crushed by Morgan’s disappearance and wanting to get back home. She finds herself with some Indian’s at a mountain and they tell her to walk into the mountain. I am not really sure what part these indians really play. They make one other appearance in the book and say nothing of value in my opinion. She ends up finding Morgan tied, gagged and badly hurt. Then the mountain starts to ‘move’ and they end up getting separated by falling rocks, and Joss gets crushed and dies. Then we are told that she has her life in 1899 flash before her eyes as if she actually lived it. This is not explained just told that she has a flash of her being married and having three kids and them living in her grandmothers house (or the Hawes house aka the house they her and Morgan build together in this 1899 reality)So at this point I am confused. So she does live this 1899 life? If that is true, how? She just died? I don’t understand how she can have all these memories of a life that couldn’t happen because I was just clearly told that she got crushed by falling rocks! Not to mention that lack of anything solid in any of the story told up to this point. Then she is back in 2011 watching herself at the side of the lake like before getting pulled back into 1899. So at this point there are two of her. One that is again getting pulled into 1899 and on that has already been through that situation and back in 2011, but it is not the 2011 she left behind. It is a 2011 that still has her as a pop-star and Kyle Copeland never disappeared he is actually a pop-star himself and Kyle and Joss are together. But we don’t get a story about all of this, we just get told that Joss suddenly remembers everything that happened in this new 2011 with a flash of memories. And that is how the book ends. There are also some other events that happen that make no sense and I failed to see how they connected to the story at all other than to fill the pages with words. Even sitting here trying to right this review I am confused on what the story was really supposed to be. It honestly feels like there are multiple half ideas that were thrown into one very short book. For example, I could see Joss getting pulled back in time because she in Morgan’s soul mate and they are meant to be together. That she some how was in the wrong time but he found a way to get her back to him. That is one idea. But then I am like, well where does this Kyle guy that disappeared have anything to do with this story? Yeah, I don’t really have an idea for that. Still not sure that it was even relevant to this story. I mean if he disappeared from the 2011 timeline then how could he end up in the 2011 timeline? It’s not like he was Morgan in a past life and then Joss and Morgan come back to 2011 from 1899 to be together in her timeline. Because apparently she actually some how lives out the time line from 1899, even though she died. I honestly could go on about how much this book made no sense to me. I mean events happen that have absolutely no logical reasoning to them. And yes I get that it is a book anything can happen, but even books have false logic behind things that happen. Sure we don’t actually have the ability to have a super hero like Iron Man but there is still a false logic behind it that explains falseness that makes it feel real. There was nothing like that in this book. I felt so disconnected from this world that the author was trying to create. I feel like maybe there is just an entire section that I didn’t get? I have seen other reviews and people talking about how this is a great book but I just do not see it? If anyone else has read this book and has a different take on the story that was trying to be told please let me know. I never thought that I would give a 1 rating to any of the books I would read but I would never recommend anyone to read this book.
review 2: D.L. Snow's writing makes my heart sing. I started with SLAYER, then I went in search of other titles by this author. After reading SIREN'S SONG, I'm in heaven. Written from the heroine's point of view, this is the story of a young woman dragged back to 1899, her struggle to adapt to her new surroundings, and her constant determination to return home to her own time. With a blend of action, romance, and ghostly intervention, SIREN'S SONG is golden. This review comes with a warning: When you sit down to read SIREN'S SONG, get comfortable because you'll be glued to the pages until you reach The End! less
