review 1: This is a book that I got for free on amazon. Currently it is 99 cents. Click on the link to read an excerpt.David has grown up in a loveless home. His father loves him but rarely shows it. His mother is distant. He doesn't realize this until he meets Mary on vacation when he is 17. Her parents love her and each other and it shows in everything they do. Mary and David only get to be together for one day but it's memorable. They text back and forth for awhile until Mary's friends convince her to date a boy at school. David is sad about this. He misses her.The next summer David and his parents go back to the same house at the beach on Emerald Isle, North Carolina. He is hoping that Mary's family rent the place next door again. They do and after a slow start he and Mary are b... moreack together. This time they stay together through the year. He visits and she visits. Now it's the summer before they go off to college. They are going to the same college. They both are so excited to start out together. But David's mother is jealous. She never really gave him much attention until Mary came along. One night, someone breaks into Mary's place and kidnaps her. David's father, who is a Virginia state policeman gets killed in a gun battle between him and the kidnappers. What is happening? Who is responsible?I enjoyed this story. Mary and David were sweet characters. The story moved along very well. I liked that this was a romance mystery.
review 2: Wow! This book took off on a totally different direction than I thought it was going to go. I thought it was going to be about teenagers drifting apart because of life in general, not a murder/kidnap. I wasn't over the moon about the introduction of the two main characters. I found it hard to believe that from the brief encounter and dialogue that these two were head over heels for each other right away. This part just wasn't written very well in my opinion. The book is written from the male perspective, which seems a bit rare. Took a HUGE turn 2/3 of the way through the book. I didn't see the whole situation with the murder/kidnap as very believable. It was written fairly well but was setup kind of like you'd expect from an action movie. I did like that the loose ends were tied up at the end but I just didn't imagine one of the characters to have been the one responsible for this. She was portrayed as a desperate woman stuck in a rut but not a murderer.Overall it was an ok read but I wouldn't seek out this author again. less
