review 1: I wish I could say that I liked this book as much as others have, but I guess you can't like everything. I really liked the idea of this book, but for me I could not get into the book due to the style of the writing. It is not that I found the writing bad or poorly edited, it was not, it was simply that the style did not suit me as a reader. I pushed myself to continue to read thinking that maybe I would get used to the style, but I didn't. Shame, so many people seem to have loved it.
review 2: I've not read Mr. Manning before but after this, I'll rectify that. I'm a fantasy lover and this really worked for me. I loved that Gio was quite not-human in his reactions to the world and how he sees it. I loved his world and how he and the phoenix interact with it... more. All too often shifters retain very little of their animal and Gio carried his with him through the story. Edgar is also a very good character. It was an inventive story and I enjoyed it. less
