review 1: Like many reviewers wrote, this book definitely made me think of Downton Abbey's first season, the time before WWI when the aristocracy was desperately holding on to their way of life and everyone was hiding from the realities of the social and political conflicts of the time. The descriptions are beautiful, and the characters' inner thoughtsare often thought provoking, but I still felt like I didn't get to know them that well. They had great inner thoughts, but communicating honestly with other characters was sparse. However, that may have been deliberate, showing the stiff upper lip and reserve of the British at that time.

... moret in a great house in the Edwardian era, and it does have this feel, it is an exceptionally well-written example of this type of book. When I began reading, I originally planned to spend about 30 minutes reading and then come back to finish it on the weekend, but it was too delicious! I stayed up late and read the entire book in one sitting. It was that good. What I particularly enjoyed was the author's ability to convey the emotional states and dilemmas of the somewhat large cast of characters without resorting to overwrought language. It made for a very believable and engrossing story. I wish I could find more books like this; I truly hated to come to the end. less

No character development at all just a writer telling a mediocre story.
