review 1: I'm torn about the rating on this one. I think it's more likely worth 3.5 - 4 stars, but for me it was a 3 star read.So what brought it down for me?Having read several other retellings of the story, this one did not include anything new. It is a very faithful retelling of the fairy tale but that means it didn't have much new to add to all the other retellings I've already read.Also, it was interesting to have both male and female PoV... However, there was not enough to differentiate between the two and both voices sounded very similar. What's more, scenes were frequently told from both PoVs, which made the book feel a lot longer than it needed to be.The good: The language use was lyrical - I really enjoyed it! And this is BatB, I can't dislike it. :)
review 2: ... moreI love "Beauty and the Beast", and have enjoyed some of the newer retellings. My all-time favorite, read over and over again, is Robin McKinley's "Beauty", which I feel can't be topped. That said, I really enjoyed this book; written from alternating points of view, that of Mira and that of the Beast, it allows the reader to get inside each of them and watch the growth and change occur. It was very interesting to see the Beast become aware of the "why" of his beastliness. At the beginning he is a thoroughly unlikeable character, but through the course of the novel, he changes. Isn't that what "B&tB" is all about? A fun read, and one I will probably reread at some time in the future. less
