review 1: Interesting, and quite unsettling. The chapters read like New Yorker longreads, not surprising because the author is a New Yorker staff writer. While it is a pop scence book, it's well referenced, and I found myself loading lots of scientific articles on my iPad for further reading. I personally liked the chapter on Georges Cuvier very much. With all the - justified - focus on Darwin it's easy to forget his predecessors so I am glad this book gave me a much needed short intro on Cuvier.
review 2: Ms Kolbert blends personal experiences with current and previous research on previous mass extinctions (or near extinctions) of life on earth. I appreciated her calm and measured explanations of of the extinction process. This effort is not a polemic and the book doe
