review 1: I figured I was having issues with this book because I had taken a few years off from reading. Sadly, after reading other reviews, I wasn't the only one with these problems. The characters, plot, and setting were cookie cutter cliques. Nothing was a surprise. Nothing grabbed me and forced me to continue to see what was going to happen. Raven was beyond stereotypical. "I'm so goth! Oh my goth! My gothic mate! GOTH! GOTH! GOTH!" Edward Scissorhands lamp? Nightmare Before Christmas clock? I kept waiting for character depth on any of them. The only one was Alexander, and that's a stretch to say there was anything exciting. The only depth we see is the "inner conflict" over her seeing his coffin. That's it. Honestly, I would say it should be read by 12-15 year olds only because... more this is the second time reading it. The first time I read it, I was about 13 and loved it. Now that I'll be 18 in less than a month, I found too many problems to enjoy it. I don't know if it was marketed towards the middle school age or not, but that is who would most likely enjoy it.
review 2: I did not enjoy this book..but that does not mean others would share my opinion of it. I recommend this for middle schoolers or 14- 15 year olds. I found this book to be a little immature for me. I think it was my age or maybe the protagonist. I am nineteen and I guess I expected...more from this story. The main character was annoyingly attracted to goth vampire type things that I found myself rolling my eyes at times, but that is just my opinion lol. :) less
