review 1: Main character Laura doesn't fit in with most kids her age. Her family is odd and they live in the "haunted mansion" in town. New boy moves into town-- maybe even odder than Laura-- should she befriend him or avoid him? Naturally the two become friends upon working together to solve the mysteries of her old mansion home. Overall, the story is pretty good, though there are few ups and downs, which is fine for many readers. The theme of fitting in and the slight mystery about the house and the boy, Leon, will be plenty to appeal to many readers. This book is best for about grades 5-7.
review 2: An unlikeable and amorphous main character, uneven writing, and a barely-there plot make what seemed like a surefire charmer – a girl exploring the old house her fami
... morely owns and discovering a mystery – into a clunker. The book’s upside is all in its potential, because the actual story is bland. I think most younger readers would be bored by this meandering, nothing-really-happens tale. Not recommended. less
