review 1: Good addition to pregnancy books. Really interesting - as it takes the recommendations and explains them using fact and numbers.. certainly made me think; I knew I was supposed to avoid cured meats - parma ham and jamon serrano, but didn't know that cold chicken/turkey carried the same risk. Or that a recent outbreak of listeria in the US was from a vegetable (cauliflower? can't quite remember which). also that the chance of getting salmonella from British eggs was very low as supermarket bought eggs are from chickens that have been vaccinated against it. Made me feel pretty confident in making my own decisions on what I would and wouldn't eat.
review 2: This is undoubtably one of my favorite pregnancy / parenting books that I've read so far. It was written by
... more a female economist, who when she found out she was expecting her first baby, decided to track down the original sources of many of the truisms that pregnant women in the US are lectured about today, whether it is the effects of drinking alcohol while pregnant (the original study was done using pregnant women who were binge-drinking drug addicts) or how much more accurate amniocentesis is versus other screening tests (very negligible, especially when considering the risk of miscarriage from amino). As an engineer, I really respected the author's motivation to understand the actual source data behind the truisms, so that she could make informed decisions based on data rather than heresy. This book was definitely more influential in our decision-making process than other pregnancy books I've read, and really heightened my awareness to be a vocal advocate for my own health choices and question the insanity of the pregnancy industry in the US. It is not a pregnancy reference book, but rather a philosophical approach to looking at some of the bigger decision points that you will encounter throughout pregnancy, labor, and delivery. less
