review 1: I buy almost all my clothes secondhand, and for whatever reason I rarely give a second thought to the potential stories behind the pre-owned, pre-worn things I clothe myself with, so this beautifully designed book really opened my eyes to the people behind the clothes. There's some amazing autobiographical essays about random items of clothing in this book--some hilarious, some heartbreaking. A few of the essays try too hard to be introspective and come off as super petty compared to the truly poignant and tragic ones, but I still enjoyed this weirdly intimate little book of stories about worn-out shoes, old shirts, 80s woman of power frocks, and an amazing canary yellow cashmere coat purchased at huge discount at an Hermes boutique.
review 2: I loved this book
... more: the concept, because I think this way about my clothes as well, imbuing them with an inherent sentimental value; and the layout, showing the clothes displayed simply and neutrally before exposing the reader to their story. I thought some of the histories are powerful, even if only for small reasons, that helped them to resonate with me as just a normal person. This is not a book about celebrities. Really enjoyed reading it, wished it had been longer. less

I enjoyed these vignettes describing people's favorite clothing. I don't know what I would choose!

Great concept. Autobiographical/ slice-of-life, and really well written.
