review 1: Extraordinary. A nuanced, unflinching, outsider's perspective on a Cold War-era MSF (Doctors Without Borders) mission into the mountains of Afghanistan, revealing the ordinary heroism of MSF's staff and mission; but equally, too, a portrayal of Didier Lefevre's solo encounters with the region. The format is worth remark: Guibert's art is quietly effective, understated, drawing the reader to the next photo and dramatizing Didier's shots in sometimes remarkable ways. We're left with the awareness that this is a journal, an incomplete artifact pieced together only in retrospect, yet perhaps the truest account that could be assembled.
review 2: I found this to be a quite intriguing work: a collection of personal memoir, photography, and graphic illustration depicti
... moreng an MSF (from the French: Doctors Without Borders) trip into Afghanistan. For Westerners in the post-9/11 era, the text does well to situate Afghan culture and its people outside the limiting scope of war and prejudice. To boot, it's told with the honesty and flair of a good travel journal: the central protagonist, Didier Lefevre is not always noble, not always tough, and not always understanding of foreign cultures. This adds to the realism of traveling in harsh/unknown conditions and pulls the reader into the charismatic landscape of a place most of us will never see. less
