review 1: I listened to the audio book and I give 5 stars to both the content and the narration. This is a very powerful story which I believe should be required reading from middle school on up through high school. The narrator has a soothing, gravelly voice and what I will assume is a Sudanese accent, giving the narrative authenticity and heart. Hard to listen to some of the horrific experiences Emmanuel Jal recounts but in my opinion well worth vicariously enduring the pain, terror, loneliness, alienation, and shame to reach a place of a little light and maybe even hope.
review 2: Emmanuel Jal's "War Child" is a gateway into the mind of a child that had been required to face war and its brutal phycological effects. "War Child" is a truely inspiring story of a child
... more that manages to survive against astonishingly low odds. Emmanuel describes the brutal form of teaching used to turn children into unfeeling, killing machines. He experinced alot in his short lifetime up until he was saved. Some were gruesome, some depressing and some were painful but Emmanuel does not stray from describing every detail no matter how disturbing. This give you a look into what he endured that no human should be put through, undoubtably a child. Not only did he face the war with the Arabs but as the Nuer and Dinka tribes turned against each other Jal also delt with fighting within his army and racial discrimination. "War Child" takes you on a plunge into to lowest points in humanity as you see children killing each other and thirsting for blood and revenge. While at the same time these children are beaten and trained to no longer feel or show emotion and pain. They had the thought that nothing in this world matters except for killing your enemys drilled into their brains. This book is a interesting read that is moving and inspirational, yet also shows you the darkness that clouds some countries. less
