The day has come! Today, I made my first adventure to The Windmill Hot Dogs in Brick, NJ on Route 70. Though this is not the original location, I was assured the fries would taste exactly the same as the original in Long Branch, NJ.
I pulled into the parking lot of a strip mall, with Windmill’s squished between a 7-Eleven and a nail salon. I walked into the store, and had to wait a few minutes to be greeted at the counter of an empty restaurant, but sure enough was warmly welcomed by a nice man in a cute little apron and hat. It was recommended to me by a friend to try the cheese fries here at The Windmill, so I ordered those, with light cheese, and a Pepsi (despite my love for strictly Coke products). My name was called out, and I picked up my fries, got some ketchup on the side, and took my first cheesy bite.
At First Bite: “These are the bomb.” I took one bite of these crispy, cheesy, crunchy, crinkle fries, and was in heaven. There was just enough cheese (sauce, not fresh/real cheese at all) on top, the outside was perfectly crispy, and the inside super light and fluffy. A few fries on top were exactly what I’d want every cheese fry I’d ever eat again to taste like, and then I got to the middle.
While I asked for light sauce, because one of the biggest problems with cheese fries is soggy fries in the middle, there was still a lot of sauce in the middle. The once-well-done, crunchy goodness became soft and soggy, I may as well have been eating cheesy mashed potatoes (not necessarily a bad thing, but not when you want to be eating fries!). When I ate about three of those, I accepted defeat and appreciated the delicious fries I had eaten just a few moments before.
When it comes to rating these fries, I give them a 5.
