review 1: I've been on a kick reading books by doctors about the practice of medicine, and this is one of the finest. Far more than just a series of case histories, though it includes that, this is a literary text, as good as any book of fiction, with a strong voice, wonderfully wrought images and characters, and a goal of exploring the lives of people, both patients and doctors. I wish this author was a friend so that I could go out to dinner with him and just listen to his stories. Smart, engaging, full of honest reflection without ego and with a clear sense of care for everyone who comes into the hospital.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book. I'm sure my interest & experience in ER/Psych/Corrections nursing is a big factor in my fascination of the Bellevue world d
... moreescribed; as well as my interest in the Latin American culture. Not sure someone who doesn't share these interest would enjoy it as much, but I sure did! I sure would like to meet someone who knows Dr. Manheimer personally, and be able to question them "Is he really that nice?" "Does he really go out of his way so much as to help out the family of a hospital housekeeper?" Sounds a little too good to be true, as I've never even set eyes on the leadership of the healthcare companies I have worked for, but I hope he's "for real". If only we could nominate him to head a healthcare reform committee. We might actually improve healthcare in the US. less

I agree with another reader, interesting subject matter, but way too many details and tangents.

I thought it was interesting reading about different cases in the book.

Did not like at all. Was book club choice. Pomposity squared.
