review 1: Eric Weiner was raised sort of Jewish. Anyone from New York will know what that means--his family did Passover and Hanukkah and he was Bar Mitzvahed. The actual ins and outs of his birth faith remained something of a mystery to him. This book is about his journey of "shopping for religion." Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Raelism (new religion re: UFOs and guy from Canada), Judaism. Weiner is a very entertaining writer--you can recognize his nervous personality--the kind of person who wants to be liked so he makes jokes. This is one of the problems. Sometimes he jokes at the expense of other people's beliefs. I don't think that is his intention--his jokes are focused on his own shortcomings, but they sometimes fall flat.I'm sorry he included Raelism (amusing though i... moret is) simply because I can't take this one seriously. It belongs in The New Yorker, not a book of "credible religions." (I realize they are all somewhat incredible, but many have longer histories.)If you are interested in a New Yorker's view of religions, you will find this book enjoyable, but if you are truly a seeker, you will want to look elsewhere.
review 2: During a frightening medical emergency, the author was asked by a nurse "Have you found your God yet?" Not God, but YOUR God. The phrasing intrigued the author, a self-described "gastronomical Jew", to begin an exploration of several different religions and sects, to fine one that he could embrace. Each chapter is devoted to a different religion, which Weiner dives into rather than merely reading about it or interviewing others involved with each religion. I say religion, but his explorations take him to Wicca, shamanism, and some other "fringe" religions in addition to his original Judaism. His writing style is humorous, making the book accessible without being irreverant towards the groups he tries out. Our Wednesday evening church group took this book on, and we have enjoyed learning alongside Mr. Weiner, and our discussions have been often punctuated with laughter as we have pointed out some funny passages. less

Sometimes I wish I was Eric Weiner. Enough said. A great book for anyone who questions the Divine.
