review 1: Very interesting window into the upper-crust east-coast society of the mid-1900s. These are people for whom the robber-barons of the mid-late 1800s are pushy upstarts with new money. Lots of interesting historical insight into the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s, too, starting out on the east coast and then in San Francisco. I applaud Eve Pell and the journey she's been on. She also recently wrote a "Modern Love" column for the ny times, which was sweet and full of hard-won wisdom.
review 2: More like two and a half stars. This is a memoir by Eve Pell, and I picked it up because my neighborhood is named after the Pell family. She was raised in privilege in New York high society, and later became a social activist and journalist. She seems very nice, but ... I suspe
... morect she feels there is something especially poignant about her personal journey into a heightened awareness of class and race, and instead, the book is mostly interesting as a snapshot of Rich People Behaving Poorly, and I had the added benefit of knowing some of the geographic locales that come into play.Grade: C+Recommended: Probably not unless you have a special interest in the subject matter. less

I could have read much more about the author's childhood and less about her adult life.
