review 1: This book contain some fascinating and deep insights. This book also covers an amazing breadth of political development (and decay). Several points made really stuck with me, but I'm afraid that it was diluted amidst the scope of the book. The cataloging of every political development was amazing, but I found it a bit tedious. This would definitely be a great discussion starter in a political science book group or senior undergrad class..
review 2: This work can stand on its own, yet I think a better understanding requires reading The Origins of Political Order. I appreciated the examination of different nations and how we can understand those that succeeded at nation building and those that didn't. Some of that was particularly relevant to the recent events
... morein Iraq and Afghanistan. This boo reads surprisingly quickly. It is more data rich, as there is more data to be had. Certainly interesting to understand the difference between patrimonial and clientelistic regimes. I appreciated the authors restraint in not providing particular policy solutions to the problems we have here in the US. At the same time, I'm curious if he has any specific ideas for change. I noticed the author make claims that the western welfare states are not sustainable, yet I missed where he proved that. Overall, quite a good read. less

A long march through a work that is best described as "exhaustive." Very much worth the effort.
