Belangrijke personages zijn allemaal figuren uit de wetenschap of de culturele elite, die zich op de één of andere manier verhouden tot hoe de maatschappij vorm wordt gegeven. Zij zijn óf de dromers die vooruitgang zien, óf zij belichamen de mensen die de onontkoombare rafelrandjes waarnemen. Het schetst het beeld van hoe idealen nagstreefd bleven worden terwijl deze in werkelijkheid steeds verder van het praktische nut af kwamen te staan. review 2: I find Russian communism to always be such a fascinating topic to delve into for so many people nowadays it seems like such an obvious failure. As this book shows, though, there were people who tried to find a way to make Russian communism work, who thought they could change the world. The various stories show the human side of the world in Russia after the death of Stalin, trying to find a path away from Stalinism. The stories were sometimes difficult to follow for every chapter changed characters but it shows an important point of view that seems to be overlooked frequently. To many in Russia, communism was going to change and improve the world and this novel is a showcase for the mindset of various Russians, an important shift from the usual direct cynicism. less
