review 1: When Pearce wrote this about 5 years ago, it was news. Now the "news" is how little things have changed. He does a great job of exploring our material needs and desires and giving us a more complete picture of what it took to put that cell phone in your pocket, that gold chain around your neck, that coffee in your cup. It's a real eye opener and he names a number of people and corporations. His stories are intersting, though they could be told better. His writing could have used a better editor. If you are interested in sustainability, this would be a good place to start.
review 2: I found this book relatively easy to read, although it took me a while to get all the way through it because of the somewhat poignant/sad mini-chapters. The various topics (coffee,
... more sugar, green beans, cotton, aluminum, "rubbish" paper, computers, cell phones, etc.) were all covered in their own chapters, which made the book relatively easy to follow. Some of the chapters were very short - just when you were getting into the story, the chapter ended. I appreciated the human story that was brought front-and-center for each of the pieces. Understanding the global connections is critical for everyone to make better decisions about how they purchase and use products. Although other books have delved deeper, this book is a great introduction into being more eco-aware. less
