Vancouver Whitecaps are not resting in the off-season, looking ahead to going one step further in the MLS Cup in 2018, have signed former West Ham defender Doneil Henry.
The 24-year-old centre-back penned a four-year contract to join the MLS franchise, after a very unsuccessful time in England with West Ham, having been loaned out to Blackburn Rovers and AC Horsens.
Initially starting his career with fellow MLS Canadian side Toronto FC, Henry will now ply his trade under Carl Robinson after the Welshman managed to get Vancouver to the MLS Cup play-offs this season gone.
The following is a great quote on Doneil Henry’s acquisition by Vancouver Whitecaps
THE HISTORY“Doneil is an athletic centre back who’s strong in the air. He likes to defend, and will be a good complementary piece to our core of defenders,” said head coach Carl Robinson, who was co-captain for Toronto FC when Henry was wearing the armband in the TFC Academy.
“His experience in Europe will serve him well. Doneil has a point to prove and we look forward to bringing him in.”
Born in New York and raised in Brampton, Henry linked up with Toronto FC’s academy at the age of 15 and made his professional debut for the club in 2010.
Established as a regular starter during the 2010/11 campaign, he was a mainstay in central defence over the rest of his time at the club, producing one goal in 49 appearances in all competitions.
In 2014/15 Henry joined Apollon Limassol in a ill-fated move, making 0 appearances. A loan back to Toronto FC in 2014 was called upon, Henry would make 14 appearances scoring once for TFC.
A move to West Ham United and the Premier League would follow, again in an ill-fated move. Two loan moves, first to Blackburn Rovers for 2015 and 2015/16 would follow, then AC Horsens in 2016.
THE PROSPECTS
After last season’s performance the Vancouver Whitecaps will be looking to go one step further this upcoming season. The acquisition of Doneil Henry will definitely help secure the Whitecaps defence.
After Robinson’s great season for the Whitecaps in the Western Conference, the defensive deal for Henry could very well add to the defensive fire power.
The Whitecaps’ kick off the 2018 season at home to MLS Canadian rivals Montreal Impact. A perfect game to see how Henry could fair in the Robinson system.
