review 1: This book is a wake-up call to America that it is not Presidents who run our country; it is those who hold the largest megaphones. This is also proof of how one man's obsession and masterful fear-mongering can cower the powerful into subservience. I believe Roger Ailes is a terrorist. He will destroy everything to satisfy his warped belief in his own intelligence. He really believes he can rule the world. And so do his sycophants at Fox. These views of mine do not come from the author's words. In fact, he does what he can to be objective. However, it's hard to be objective about a one-dimensional personality. Sherman has footnotes of at least 125 pages and credits his fact-checkers by name.I couldn't put the book down, although the last 50-60 pages deal with Ailes's attemp... morets at nation-building in his small tucked-away town that he tried to bend to his wishes. This was Sherman's first novel. What a debut. I highly recommend the book.
review 2: In trying to understand what prompted the political anger of those in my peer group (60+) since the elections of 2004 that only escalated in 2008, I was quickly drawn to Fox News reporting as a driving source of that anger. The distorted commentary of the likes of Beck and Hannity was so blatant to anyone with the slightest ability to differentiate fact from agenda that I was truly amazed they could be allowed to be on TV. But there they were. I initially blamed Murdock, but then Ailes became the name most associated as the messenger. I can't be sure how much of this book is true or spun, but it sure compliments a lot of what I've gleaned on my own. The "Fair and Balanced" or "We Report and You Decide" are just a slogans, as realistic as "We'd Like to Teach the World to Sing". The network has an agenda --- to battle liberal bias in the mainstream media (mainstream apparently meaning the rest of the media). And to do so, Fox is willing be much more bias and manipulative than any of the media they label as lame-stream. Even when they don't have anything to negative to report, they will create it like with a teaser, "You, won't believe what Obama did today. Stay tuned...". The following story will be a reporting of the facts --- facts that are not unique or even controversial if you understand the issue. However the teaser along the tone of the talking head will lead many viewers (my peers) to conclude that Obama has once again stepped on the constitution, embarrassed America, or some other un-American activity that day. Another of the Fox tools used effectively is the "me against them". Everyone likes to feel special. Fox helps viewers feel special with their defensive stand against other media reporting. "We (Fox) alone give you the real story facts, so now you are "special" in your knowledge." Is this how Fox has garnered the largest cable news audiences and revenues. Possibly, it works for many religious leaders. But many religions are just made up with slick sayings. Is Ailes the leader?. I don't know, but Mr. Sherman presents a good case for Ailes as the false prophet of unbiased reporting. less
