review 1: Or, more accurately, she hiked half the PCT. I was wondering how I could be 75% done when they were only halfway--because she didn't finish. Not that I blame her for stopping, she had lost way too much weight and could not safely continue. Which shows a bit of poor planning on their parts--he got enough to eat, but she wasted away to almost nothing. So, a different sort of hiking memoir since only one of them finished--nice in a way.
review 2: I enjoyed this memoir in spite of, or perhaps even because of the fact that it seemed to have a split personality. The first two-thirds of the book reads like a Pacific Crest Trail diary, describing Gail's experiences with her husband on the California portion of the trail. The focus shifts between the physical difficultie
... mores of walking the trail, and the effect that the journey had on their relationship. The last third, written about the time that she left the trail while her husband finished without her, described a more internal journey. As my interest in the trail has been growing (I'll never embark on a thru-hike...don't worry, Mom; the sections about hiking through weeks of snow and crossing raging rivers are enough to insure that,)the early descriptions of trail etiquette and traditions kept my interest. You might even say that I devoured the portion about the hike itself. By the time the book's focus shifted, however, I was attached enough to Gail to follow her off the trail, and I found myself relating to some of her personal struggles. This book might not be for everyone; if you want more of a focus on the physical experience of the PCT, there are probably better choices out there. That said, this book does a good job of showing the reader why someone might step away from 'real' life to face five months of the physical challenge of 20+ miles a day, sleeping in bi-polar weather, and living of freeze-dried food in the first place. less
