review 1: He uses multiple racial characters to underscore the universal nature of the story. All the essential elements are present. Hinds preserves Shakespeare’s meter and rhyme in the text. As in Beowulf and Odyssey, Hinds lets his images tell the story as much as possible. He creates the tension between the two families and the deep conflicted within Juliet when her father forbids her to marry Romeo. What a great way to introduce people to Shakespeare and the Romeo and Juliet story!
review 2: I loved this graphic novel adaptation of Romeo and Juliet! Everything is the same--the language, the costumes (for the most part), the Verona setting so beautifully drawn. What is different is that all the major characters are people of color. Interestingly, the servant
... mores are all white. How powerful is this to have Romeo as a young black man, Juliet, a South Asian woman, the prince possibly Latino or Middle Eastern? What a way to make this classic and overly-taught play relevant and exciting and connect with so many urban schools with diverse populations. I have probably taught this play 14 times and would be thrilled to teach it again with Hinds' adaptation in hand. less
