review 1: I saw this on the bargain shelf at Chapters and thought it looked interesting: a rare look into a psychiatrist's strange and hidden world. Maybe I have been desensitized by too much reality TV, but I really didn't find these cases to be all that shocking. OK, yes, it would be strange to find a naked lady doing a headstand in a hospital room, but once you find out the reason behind it (*spoiler alert* she is diabetic and wasn't thinking clearly!), the shock value diminishes. The other cases - a shopping addict, a paranoid colleague with dementia, a rich man with agoraphobia - all seemed fairly mundane to me. It was interesting to see how Dr. Small dealt with some of the patients, and I liked that each chapter was a story in itself, so the book was easy to pick up and put do... morewn. I did enjoy it, I was just expecting a little more crazy. But, as a psychiatrist would say, maybe that's a reflection on myself, and not the book...
review 2: As a fan of narrative case studies I was very disappointed by this book. I'd previously enjoyed reading about Dr. Small's work on the ageing brain but this was very poorly written and often silly in trying to complicate situations with over-thought psychoanalysis (e.g. a married couple who both work and the wife is unhappy because the husband spends all weekend *every* weekend on his yacht without her because she gets seasick, is it odd that she wants to spend time with the man she loves?). less
