review 1: Before I get into my review of this book, I'd like to first disclaim it by saying that I love Gilbert Gottfried's standup. Therefore, anything he produces comically, I am likely to enjoy. This book was no exception; and frankly, it reads just like one of his standup routines. Therefore, I have to say that if you do not enjoy Gilbert Gottfried's sense of humor, don't bother picking up this book. If you do enjoy Gilbert Gottfried's sense of humor, the only thing I can fairly comment on is the humor in the book because, as Gottfried himself claims, he is not chasing literary excellence. His narrative is a lot of fun to read, and I got through the book in a week or so. The one star deduction was given simply because I only give five stars to books that I would read again of my... more own volition; and because of the simple narrative the book proffers, I don't think reading it twice would really get me anything else out of it besides a few recycled laughs.
review 2: I shouldn't be so critical of this book. The author begins by telling us not to expect much - which he far surpassed. Gilbert Gottfried has a thousand very funny stories and he tells them well. Unfortunately he broke one of my cardinal rules and I just couldn't forgive him after that. Several times in the book he directly addresses the reader - writing the phrase "dear reader". That phrase is my brown noise. It's so amateur and patronizing. I feel like it's grasping - CLAWING - to force a connection to the reader, and it's not appreciated. The entire rest of the book was extremely entertaining! Granted, I'm a girl and therefore mostly glossed over the dirty jokes, but he got his stories across and they were worth telling. less
