review 1: This book is about a woman who is poor. Then she meets a botanist. She teaches him all about herbs. They become lovers after his wife dies giving birth. She later becomes pregnant. He has her give the baby up. Then she dresses like a man in order to accompany him on a trip around the world. She has to bind her chest and do heavy physical labor. She eventually is discovered and gang-raped. They give this baby up as well. Overall, very sad. I would not recommend this to people.
review 2: All the fine details of this story can't be taken at face value, especially when there are contradicting versions and so many aspects simply not recorded.However, the truths that are not disputed ... that Jeanne Baret, a poor, provincial woman living in mid-18th centur... morey France, circumnavigated the globe disguised as a man ... are quite extraordinary all on their own.This book gets five stars from me because it meets my highest expectation of books--it has me craving more. I love that I was constantly referencing the globe and searching the Internet to see various flora and fauna, and other characters that set out with Baret on that fateful expedition. less
