review 1: The first half of this book sets up a worldview - through endless musing that is so thorough and repetitive as to be, often, maddening. The second half of this book completely abandons that worldview, referencing it rarely, inconsistently, and without the heft it could and should have had in breaking it down. The main character does not "learn to adapt" as the blurb promises... we just stop seeing his thoughts for a huge chunk of the book. Reading this feels like getting brainwashed by a secret group of villains that dismantles before they can actually give you an order.
review 2: A very unusual book! I found it fascinating, although I don't think I can say I liked it! I finished it in a few days which reveals how interesting it was in a revolting way. This
... morenovel strikes me as a modern version of Crime and Punishment. The main character Dr. Lenz Buchmann has been unduly influenced by his cruel and militant father and spends his life analyzing life and people in terms of power differential alone. He is totally bereft of any empathy or kindness. The author does an amazing job of writing a character study that absorbs the reader's interest while repelling the reader's sensitivity. less

A spare and tense novel. Lenz Buchmann is the politician I imagine myself to be in my head.
