review 1: This is a long book, but I loved the fact that the author took the time to set up the events, setting, and characters so thoroughly. It was truly a journey for Patrick — and Chance, to a lesser degree, since he doesn't have quite the same number of changes and revelations in his life throughout the book — and I enjoyed every minute of it. It's been a long time since I've found myself so immersed in a contemporary setting.I will definitely be looking for other books from this author.
review 2: No Sacrifice is, hands down, one of the best novels I have ever read, M/M or otherwise, and one of my favorites. Grace Duncan has created a rich, compelling story with many facets that are skillfully woven together to make a fantastic book. What No Sacrifice is:A love s
... moretory - of Patrick and Chance, two flawed men, one trying to find himself, one who already knows himself… their developing friendship, and their developing romance.A story with a rich cast of characters - The protagonists, Patrick and Chance, are interesting, lovable people, and well developed. Patrick is not the brightest person, at Grace’s admission, but he has a good heart and is dedicated, to his job and loved ones. Chance is a kind, supportive person but he has his own issues as well, especially with how he sees his own worth. The supporting characters are also all multifaceted and important to the story. We have Patrick’s adorable, funny young son Avery, the wise and fabulous drag queen Sophia, and the sweet but no-nonsense waitress Marcy and kind cook Pablo. Patrick’s wife at the beginning of the story, Emily, is a bit confusing at first in her motivations but has an important role to play, and her shy friend Sara is an interesting side character as well. Patrick’s friend and sometimes-asshole co-star Rhys plays a big role in confusing him and helping him, and will be getting his own story. Costars Sebastian and Angelo are fun, good friends to Patrick and Chance, and are deserving of their own story. Even jerk director Jack isn’t one dimensional. Patrick and Chance’s families have big roles to play in No Sacrifice. Patrick’s loving but traditional Mama Kalea and quiet father Shaughn, his wise no-nonsense great-Aunt Tutu, and his many, varied siblings all have important roles in the story. Finally, we have Chance’s strong, loving mother Violet, homophobic brother Gareth, and intense but sweet Vannah. And that’s just the main supporting cast… there are side characters who I didn’t even mention here.A coming out story - of Patrick, both to himself and others, sometimes to acceptance, sometimes to much less.A story about family - both blood and chosen family, and deciding which is more important.A story about choices - both smart and unwise, both good and mistakes.A story accurately addressing bisexuality - Patrick first has to come to terms with his own bisexuality, then deal with misconceptions and lack of acceptance from people he knows. Though Grace didn’t set out to make a PSA about bisexuality when writing No Sacrifice, the book does address many of the challenges that bisexual people face in society. A sexy story - No Sacrifice has a healthy helping of some very steamy, sexy scenes. Grace is very good at writing varied sex that is emotional and hot.An emotionally moving story - This story has made me laugh, and made my heart ache. Fans of humor, angst, and fluff will all find something to enjoy.A friends to lovers story - Patrick and Chance start out as friends, and we get to read their relationship developing over the months. And finally, a fantastically written book - Grace R. Duncan has a wonderful way with words. Her prose is so well written, and the dialogue flows so realistically. No Sacrifice comes with my highest recommendations. I have already read it three times and know I will come back to it again and again, because it is just so fantastic. less
